Ashleigh Graham

Junior/Trainee Merchandise Planner

IIE Bachelor of Commerce
The IIE’s Varsity College Westville
GRADUATED CLASS OF 2018
Company: Sheet Street

Describe your daily duties:
A Merchandise Planner I am responsible for planning and managing how the money is spent when purchasing the product. I am also responsible for controlling the budget and managing the supply chain. I work closely with the buyer and will be working closely with another Planner and doing various training and courses to prepare myself for the job.

Why did you choose the qualification you studied?
Since I was little, I have always pictured myself working in a big corporate environment and have always had an interest for the business world, and to be honest, I wasn’t 100% sure what I specifically wanted to do in this business world as such. I always enjoyed business studies at school and thought a BCom degree would open many doors for me.

Is your qualification relevant to your job? If so, did your studies adequately prepare you for your job?
Yes, my qualification is relevant. I needed my BCom degree to get into this position, as one needs to have had knowledge of the supply chain, retail environment, businesses as well as a financial mind frame. All these are subjects in the BCom degree so I feel they prepared me adequately.

What was the one thing that stood out the most for you about The IIE’s Varsity College?
The structure of lecturers and the pleasant work environment. The lecturers and staff were always willing to go that extra mile to see you succeed and the amazing people that I have met.

What advice would you give to students who are looking for or about to embark on their first job?
Be proactive; don’t leave it until you have finished your degree to start sending your CV out or looking on job sites.
