3 tips for choosing the right accounting course

While you’re selecting which degree to study, research your options. You may discover a similar degree you hadn’t known about previously, or find a major that could benefit your career. We’ve created a short list of inquiries you should make while looking at accounting degrees. Read on to find out more

  1. Accounting versus bookkeeping
If you’re interested in pursuing a career in accounting you’ll know there are two very different types of accounting courses. You’ll have to choose between general accounting and bookkeeping. While accounting deals with the analysis and use of finances within an organisation, bookkeeping is the recording of a business’s finances.
  2. Selecting a field or career
Once you’ve selected which type of accounting course you’d like to study, it’s merely a case of selecting which field is most attractive to you. There are many fields for you to pick from, each one completely different to the other. For example, you might be interested in financial accounting, which deals with the finances of a business or organisation. Or perhaps you’re keen on management accounting, which focuses on how financial information can be utilised in the workplace.
  3.  Job market
In South Africa there is a perpetual need for qualified accountants and bookkeepers. Both degrees are beneficial in the long run as they are essential in business.
  4. Type of degree
You can choose between a diploma, a graduate degree and a post-graduate degree. Each one of these options requires a different time frame. So, ensure you pick the programme that fits into your timeline best.
