GRADUATED CLASS OF 2018
Company: Aramex

Describe your daily duties:
My daily duties include gross profit analyses, rate recommendations, customer and market research, presentations and marketing campaigns.

Why did you choose the qualification you studied?
I chose it because I was more of a creative thinker and needed an environment that would complement my strengths. I chose to embrace the marketing core discipline because it has a place in every business and industry, with every brand needing to be marketed in some way or another to gain exposure and manage its reputation with its customer. Marketing requires you to be analytical, strategic and disciplined while, at the same time, being a people’s person and social butterfly, all in one. For these reasons, I felt this is what would best suit me and is an avenue where I see myself attaining business success as well as job satisfaction.

Is your qualification relevant to your job? If so, did your studies adequately prepare you for your job?
There is no substitute for a good education but it has to go hand in hand with experience for it all to make sense. I see elements of what I’ve studied in everything I do in my working environment. There may be different perspectives on the tasks or processes at hand, but principally the outcome or goal remains consistently the same. Understanding what solutions were used in the past to overcome a problem gives one the foundation to innovate better solutions based on a working model. The economy and industry are forever evolving and to evolve we must have an understanding of what already exists so that functional and effective solutions can be implemented to achieve growth. As an individual you are responsible for managing your own performance and making sure your contribution to your company and industry is of your best quality. Commitment and application of my studies did equip me with tools needed for my role and has given me a broad understanding of the many activities and levels a successful business requires to achieve excellence. With the skills learnt during my degree, I have been able to quickly identify opportunities and feel confident in suggesting or implementing a solution I have thought of. Lastly working together with my peers on projects and discussions has helped me develop my skills that I now use in boardrooms and offices to openly discuss topics and manage conversations in a productive and efficient manner.

What is your greatest career achievement to date?
I had fulfilled my role as business analyst with Aramex for less than 8 months when I was approached by another business unit to join their team as customer relationship manager. Although I was not top of the class within my graduate program, my personality allowed me to stand out from the rest and my determination toward achieving my goals allowed me to excel.

What are your future career plans?
Currently I am preparing myself to migrate into the retail industry and become a customer relationship manager for our PostNet stores. Here I plan to make a difference in the minds of the storeowners by finding creative solutions and ultimately grow the PostNet brand. Once I have fully taken on this role I will be able to set future goals based on my observations there.

What was the one thing that stood out the most for you about The IIE’s Varsity College?
The IIE’s Varsity College allowed me the opportunity to grow by giving me the freedom to find my independence. Although doing tests and assignments may feel mundane, it prepares you for dealing with different situations, personalities and managing deadlines to meet targets on time.

What advice would you give to students who are looking for or about to embark on their first job?
Your first job may feel like the most intimidating thing, but nothing can prepare you for it. You must just have the confidence in yourself to take up new opportunities and allow yourself to grow. You will always be learning something new every day, and it is up to you to make the most of it. Greet everyone from the cleaners to the CEO, bring your positive energy, encourage those around you and always be willing to learn. Doing this will put you in the best position to tackle your challenges and achieve success. You only fail when you stop trying.
