Claire Niselow

Sales and Marketing Intern

IIE Bachelor of Corporate Communication
The IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town
GRADUATED CLASS OF 2017
Company: Johnson and Johnson

Describe your daily duties:
My duties include processing orders and returns, applying for permits, reporting back to the business, calculating various measurable units and forecasting. On a larger scale, I have learnt the importance of collaboration and team work in a company and what goes into being a supplier.

Why did you choose the qualification you studied?
I chose the financial management core discipline because I enjoy working with numbers and like the analyses that you learn in finance. Also, Steve Brown (Lecturer), helped me make this decision which was the correct one.

What is your greatest career achievement to date?
My greatest achievement to date is coming up with a way to streamline the permit application process which has made the process easier to track and less time consuming.

What are your future career plans?
I would love to stay in Johnson and Johnson, I am still not sure about where in the company I would like to end up which is why this internship is perfect for me.

How has the Career Centre assisted you while you were at The IIE’s Varsity College?
The Career Centre Platform is where I saw and applied for this programme, so without it, I would not have seen this opportunity. The Career Centre Coordinator was also available if ever I needed any help.

What was the one thing that stood out the most for you about The IIE’s Varsity College?
The amazing lecturers at VC stood out for me. Most of the lecturers I had, had a huge impact not only on my studies but also in shaping me as a person. They truly are amazing individuals and I feel honoured to have gotten to get to know them. Something else that has equipped me, was being the administrator for the Netball team. Being a part of the netball team became a huge part of my life but doing the admin also allowed my skills to develop further. I would not have been able to develop had I not been involved in the netball team.

What advice would you give to students who are looking for or about to embark on their first job?
Everything is so new and scary but that isn’t a bad thing. You need to immerse yourself fully into it and take as much out of it as possible. Also, work can be fun!!! ENJOY IT and SMILE!
