Sandton campus psychology student, a world-renowned water polo athlete.


Shakira January (IIE Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology student at the IIE Varsity College, an educational brand of the Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), Sandton campus), a world renowned water polo athlete, has been selected to represent South Africa at the 22nd World Aquatics Championships in Singapore from the 11th of July to the 3rd of August 2025.

She will be captaining the South African National Women’s team, which is a testament to the trust, respect and admiration she has earned and continues to earn in the sport.

“Being chosen to represent my country is not just an honour but a responsibility I hold close to my heart. I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and will give everything I have to make my team and South Africa proud”, said Shakira.

As an accomplished athlete and student, Shakira has learnt the art of being disciplined. While elite sport demands extraordinary commitment, she has consistently mirrored that same level of dedication in her academic pursuits. Her ability to navigate the demands of international competition while prioritising her studies underscores her and profound resilience and unwavering work ethic.

Shakira is proof that success is not limited to one arena and that it is achieved through passion, perseverance and hard work.
