Colleges vs universities, do you know the facts?

The recent #feesmustfall university protests have thrown South African higher education into the spotlight. This has left many people wondering what the difference is between colleges in South Africa and universities. Here’s a quick break down.

Varsity College, for instance, is an educational brand of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), the largest, most accredited private education provider in the country. So we offer tuition support for a variety of higher education degrees, diplomas and certificates.

But this doesn’t get to the root of what really happens at Varsity College. One thing you may have picked up is the word “private”. In higher education “private education” means the institution is not subsidised by the government. This is good news since it means with us, your education won’t be affected by protests, so you won’t have to worry about your education coming to a halt, or exam timetables being affected, or your safety on campus.

Private also means that we have much smaller classes. It means you get more one-on-one time with lecturers. It also means we focus on getting you into the workplace by giving you all the support you need to get through your studies, and then some.

What does this all translate into? Well, how does an 84% pass rate sound? And what about an 82% progression rate? Or perhaps most impressive of all, a massive 22% distinction rate? Compare that to the 15% graduation rate of public universities (IOL, 2013).
