4 Things No One Tells You About Teaching

It’s not all school holidays and apples on the desk…

Teachers change lives. They shape the minds and futures of so many. It’s why it’s not a profession for everyone. In fact, it takes someone very special to become a teacher. As much as it’s one of the most rewarding professions you can take up, it’s also one of the toughest. Whether you choose to go into foundation or intermediate phase teaching

An excited teacher can change the world

True passion can turn a job into a rewarding career. Have you noticed how you tend to put all of your energy into the things that you’re excited about? The same goes for the profession that you choose. It’s especially true with teaching. The best educators aren’t always the ones who studied specific degrees like intermediate phase teaching. They’re actually the ones who are the most excited about what they do. This kind of enthusiasm also rubs off on those around them. From co-workers to their students, excitement can really inspire. When it does, it pushes everyone to try that little bit harder.

Teaching takes up your whole life (in a good way)

Let it be known that teaching is a serious sacrifice. In case you didn’t already know, by becoming a teacher, you’re agreeing to surrender several parts of yourself. There are the early mornings spent prepping lessons, the lunch breaks missed when you’re helping students, and late nights marking work. That’s not to mention the weekends spent making your future classroom activities as amazing as possible. Whilst it’s totally worth it when you consider the way in which you’re going to change young lives, it isn’t without its sacrifices. This tremendous amount of effort often means less time for yourself, your hobbies and the ones you love most. That being said, it’s important for teachers to strive for balance both in the classroom and in their private lives. A happy teacher is one that makes an impact.

Your attitude will determine all

Whilst this isn’t just true within the teaching context, it’s something that more and more people need to realise. Your attitude can either be sweet or bitter. Whatever it is, you’ll be filled with it. This will make you the same. As a teacher, you’ve got to decide each day what your attitude is going to be. This will determine what your day, week, month or term is going to feel like. Yes, this is easier said than done but it’s important if you’re going to love what you do. It’s equally vital if you’re going to make the greatest impact possible.

The toughest challenges will be your biggest victories

The higher the climb the more beautiful the view. It’s something that applies to teachers too. Along the course of your career, you’ll teach students who might really struggle. Whether it’s academically or personally, these students will challenge all of your abilities as an educator. At times it will be difficult but once you break through and help them, their success will become yours too. Knowing that you can make a real difference that changes the course of someone’s life is something that never gets old.
