Top surfing students from different tertiary institutions around South Africa recently took part in the annual University Sport of South Africa (USSA) Surfing Championships held at Victoria Bay and Herolds Bay, Western Cape. Nicole Pallet, Varsity College Durban North (3rd year The IIE Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication degree), won 1st place in the ladies division for the second consecutive year and Dominic Notten, Varsity College Cape Town (2nd year The IIE Bachelor of Commerce degree) won 1st place in the men’s division. This is the 3rd consecutive year that Varsity College won the USSA Surfing contest’s ladies division.
Wade Simkiss, Varsity College Durban North (3rd year The UNISA BCompt degree), came in 3rd place in the men’s division and Chanelle Botha, Varsity College Westville (2nd year The IIE Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication degree), came in 3rd place in the ladies division.
“It was great to see how well the surfers have continued to do over the past few years at the USSA surfing championships, particularly the girls. Nicole Pallet and Chanelle Botha have been a great asset to the team, Nicole winning for the 2nd year running. What is rewarding for the team, is that they have achieved well, while having a great deal of fun. The Surfing event kicked off a host of USSA tournaments which are due to start in the next few days, and hopefully the other Varsity College sports teams can do just as well,” said Jody Taylor, Regional Sports Coordinator at Varsity College.
Said Nicole Pallet, Varsity College Durban North: “I was happy to defend my title at the USSA Championships because it was my last year competing in the contest. I am so excited about the girls winning the ladies division again this year. It was a great team effort and we really had a fun time.” Nicole hopes to continue this winning form as she takes part in the Ballito Pro this weekend.
This surfing event was hosted by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University George Campus, and is a great opportunity for students to surf against each other and has some of the top up and coming talented surfers who get to make a name for themselves on the USSA ranks.
The Varsity College Sports Club offers a variety of different sporting clubs that cater for beginner sessions as well as advanced sessions. These activities are fun, healthy and geared towards the individual as well as for students that are more team orientated. Students are encouraged to get active, meet new people and relish the opportunity to participate on either a social or a competitive level like the USSA championships.
