27 enthusiastic children from MTR Smit Children’s Haven were recently welcomed by 3rd year Diploma in Sports Development Management (DSDM3) students along with VC Cares to a Sports Fun Day hosted just for them. The event was held at Linkside High School from 09:00 until 13:00.
The Varsity College Port Elizabeth’s DSDM3 students hosted the Sports Fun Day as part of their Work Integrated Learning module. Information Technology and Business, Academic Operations Coordinator, Hayde Paulsen says: “Work Integrated Learning (WIL) provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their learning in an actual and/or stimulated workplace environment. It aims to increase knowledge and develop skills using the action and reflection processes of experiential learning. The WIL module at Varsity College also provides the students with a perfect opportunity to get involved and give back to the community”.
Excitement filled the atmosphere as the children were split in teams and participated in mini games of soccer, netball and rugby. Smiles, laughter and cheering coming from all sides made the Sports Fun Day an enjoyable one for all.
Students from MTR Smit Children’s Haven were also served a lovely lunch by the DSDM3 students and VC Cares committee. The morning ended off with each student receiving a medal to acknowledge there outstanding participation in the day’s activities along with Total Sports sponsoring MTR Children’s Home with sports equipment of netball, soccer and rugby balls, to name a few.
The DSDM3 students would like to thank - Total Sports, Brian Bans, Kings Wood College and Good Year for their sponsorships towards making this event a success and much enjoyable one for all involved.
