Who is this PGCE aimed at?
This post-graduate certificate is a professional qualification for students intending to pursue a career in teaching in the Intermediate and Senior Phase (from Grade 4 to 9). This Initial Teacher Education qualification is a 120 credit qualification at NQF Level 6.
What entry requirements will I need to study this PGCE?
A recognised Bachelor’s Degree with two school subjects up to second year level. Students are
also required to have two official languages on first year level. Students who do not fulfill
the necessary requirements are allowed to register for the language modules for non-degree
purposes, concurrently with the PGCE.
Students may do the following modules:
• LPENGTS – English
• LPAFRT8 - Afrikaans
Important information about UNISA that you need to know
As a new student you need to apply to UNISA within the set application dates. These dates are
still to be confirmed. You also need to register with UNISA within the set registration dates.
Application and registration can be done on-line through the UNISA website. The UNISA
website address is follows - http://www.unisa.ac.za. UNISA does not allow any late applications or registrations. Application and registration fees at UNISA are payable by the student.
In order to be registered at UNISA, students who completed a Bachelors Degree at any other
university must request that university to supply UNISA with the following information:
• A complete academic record (symbols are not sufficient);
• Proof that the degree has been completed;
• A letter of good conduct.
UNISA then supply you with tutorial letters. These letters are one of the ways that your
lecturers at UNISA communicate with you.
What will I study in this PGCE?
Varsity College provides tuition for the UNISA Postgraduate Certificate in Education
(Intermediate & Senior Phase). A student is required to complete 10 modules in total for the
certificate:

What teaching practice is associated with this PGCE?
You will need to complete 10 weeks of practical teaching in schools, in the year in which you register for the Teaching Practice module (PFC104T).
How is this PGCE offered at Varsity College?
Lectures are in the evening. Lectures at this level are discussion based.
What must I pass in order to graduate with this PGCE?
To obtain this qualification you must pass all 10 modules.
